JoiPhone Reviews

The founders of JoiPhone have a background as an Internet service provider and the ISP, Joi Internet, grew into one of the largest ISPs in the country. JoiPhone is an offshoot from the original company. Overall, JoiPhone offers some of the most aggressive prices of many voip providers.

While researching JoiPhone, we found their website to have a bit of a chaotic feel to it but their prices are aggressive.

For their monthly plan, JoiPhone currently offers a promotion with an attractive starting price at $8.95 per month for 2 months then it will go back to the normal price of $17.95 per month. They are currently waiving the $30 activation fee. With $8.95 for first month and the $14.95 shipping & handling, your total first month price is $23.90. Everything said and done, your average monthly price for a year becomes $17.70 per month.

Compared to the other voip providers reviewed, JoiPhone's monthly price is the most aggressive at this promotional monthly rate.

As a holiday promotion, JoiPhone is offering a $95 annual prepay including taxes, 911 fee and all setup fees. Since many of our price comparisons do not include taxes, JoiPhone's annual prepay pricing is excellent. The effective annual price with shipping is $9.16 per month including shipping if you prepay annually. JoiPhone is worth a closer look especially now for budget conscious consumers in this economic environment.

I have had joiphone for about 5 months now and I'm very happy with the quality of service and the price. Before switching I had Vonage (best user interface, great sound quality but most expensive), PowerPhone (Great service, great customer service but you have to pre pay to get a good price which I can't do after loosing money to Sunrocket). JoiPhone has same sound quality as vonage or powerphone with my 3Mb dsl internet connection, good features but somewhat updated user interface or web interface to change the setting compared to vonage. Also I had to play with my router settings to get good sound quality when calling Poland. I have their Joi to world plan which includes 800 minutes to select countries which I call often for $19.99 (total with taxes $22.78) with unlimited calling in USA and Canada. Tech support is ok depending who u speak to but there is nobody to talk at billing if you have a problem (email support only with delayed replys from my experience). Overall I'm happy with the service (excellent voice quality) and the price.

I do not call a lot from home phone because I am in car almost whole day and I am using cell phone (T-Mobile unlimited). But when I get to use Joi Phone service it works for me. I can make and receive phone calls. Sound quality is not the best, but is not bad either. Features - not to many. Enough for me! Have caller ID. That impressed me. Fax machine, it is true that u cannot use it with this phone line. Customer service - I do not call them often because I have no reason to bother them. But when I called them , they were a little bit bored but they helped me out. If the things will work in the same way in the next year I will keep them!

I paid for a full year service and was to receive a modem within a week. I didnt get it in two weeks so I cancelled my service and requested a refund. A week after cancellation I received the modem via fedex but I rejected it and fedex returned it to Joiphone. The modem was late two weeks and was sent after I cancelled service. I requested refund but they kept saying they haven't received the modem though fedex tracking confirmed delivery. You'll never get to billing or shipping department by phone; only by email which they dont reply to except an automated response. Three months later no refund, I contacted American Express over the claim. AMEX tried to work with them for a month but they won't send prove of service. AMEX refunded me the $140 and gave Joiphone 30 days to prove they offered me service and if they failed AMEX will close the case. They didnt contact AMEX and the case was close I got my money 4 MONTHS later. DONT BE FOOLED...DON'T BUY JOIPHONE. YOU'LL LOSE YOUR MONEY!!!!!

You may be able to make calls ,but not recieve any or the other way around They do not refund your money. It is very difficult to get any decent treatment.

Issue 1: Slow phone service -- after you dial any number, you wait a good 8-12 seconds before getting anything, ie "ringing or busy" Issue 2: Their "terms of service" say you have "unlimited usage" but they deemed that I was "abusing" the system -- and forced me to switch to a $34 a month business plan, or they would charge me a violation fee of $200. So I had to switch, nice. Issue 3: If you prepay or pay ahead, you WONT get any refunds past the first 30 days of service. Issue 4: Email ONLY contact to billing department, who is also slow in responding, about 2-4 days turn around. Plus you always get these "we already responded to email" messages also. Issue 5: Email ONLY contact to phone number transfer group, even worse slow or no response issue. Ended up dumping them for fios and phone service with verizonm for $53 a month.

They have charged my credit card $85 on 7/1 even after I cancelled in March. No reason given for the charge. Had the "defective" routers worked, I would have gladly stayed. They send you the equipment late as well so the 30 days are up. I don't want to go to court but their unethical business practices leave me with no choice. Hawk (parent company) already had troubles with the Altana Attorney General's office in 2005. Do your research .

1. Although you can call for technical support, you may be without phone service for days if the problem can't be determined. The pressure is on you to get it figured out. 2. If it's a router issue that can't be resolved, Joiphone may have to send you another router. You pay $15.00 for them to ship it. You must return your old router and cords within 10 days. If they determine that the problem is due to your negligence or an act of God you pay $85.00 for the replacement router they sent you. 4. If you decide that Joiphone is just too much trouble, they won't refund any of the money you unwisely paid up front for a year's service.

I don't normally do reviews but if it saves someone else from the nightmare of dealing with such an incompotent company and stops them from signing up so this business will be forced out of business and do us all a favor then it's worth it. All the poor service described by others is true. Between the porting area to billing it's a toss up which area is more useless than the other. How these people are employeed when there are so many more qualified people out there in this terrible economy amazes me. No wonder the Atlanta Better Business Bureu has given this company a F - check it out atlanta.bbb.org. This is an independant authority if you don't believe this website or actual customers.

I have had JoiPhone for a couple of years, and have been pretty happy with them. Until all of a sudden I had calls to Bermuda on my phone bill which I never did. I don't know any one from Bermuda, I don't even know what a Bermudian looks like, and if I did I wouldn't talk to their Bermudian ass for 30 minutes, I don't even talk to my mother for 30 minutes. But anyway. I contacted them, the billing department is a complete waste of time since all they tell you to do is email them, since they can't give any information out. So I E-Mail 4 times. I get the automated response.. and it was over a month, and no-one responded. So I called again, asked to speak to a manager, and was informed by this inbred p.o.s that there was no manager present. I asked if there is a supervisor, or anything above him... He said, we have no Chiefs, no Supervisors, no Managers, nothing. He didn't even try to help, just NO NO NO. Anyway I FINALLY get in contact with a manager, she looks into my issue and said that she will call me back on Tuesday, low and behold, no call back. I call back on Wednesday, speak to her, and she said, that they have sent you an email (BS... no they didn't) And we can't do anything for you because when you dialed the number, you didn't call 011... I said but I never called Bermuda, she said. it was a call to the UK, but because you didn't dial the 011, then that's the reason why you got charged. I asked if they can do anything about the charges.. they said No. Unreal!!! Piss poor customer service, crappy service.. but a great price.

I started with Joi Phone over 2 years ago. I was drawn to their business line features (auto attendant, multiple lines, virtual extensions and etc.) However, from the beginning I had a ton of quality issues with the service. Poor call quality, dropped calls and outbound calls where I hear them… they can’t hear me. And the ninja of all phone problems – people that call me and get a message stating my number is no longer active. All the while I have a dial tone. So I begin to think. How long has this been down? I didn’t know. WHAT THA GRAVVYY!! (I gave cursing up a long time ago). I digress. Now remember, I’m running a business over here. So what do you think this kind of service will do for the ‘ole image? Exactly. I complain, they open a trouble ticket. I scream, they open a trouble ticket. I plead… you get the point. You know the trouble with their trouble tickets? They’re never resolved. For instance, my time-stamps for inbound calls where always wrong. The caller id stopped working. I literally can go on about other stuff, like the voip adapter being trash and being told that I have to pay for shipping on a new one (after complaining about 6 mo). Or asking for a one month's credit for 2 two years of crap and getting a few of days of credit back. Or billing me off cycle. The worst part is you can never talk to a real manager. You’re always being told to send an email to some shadowy figure that NEVER responds. Here’s the bottomline. You’re probably looking at Joi Phone because of the price coupled with features. Try out a company like phone.com – cheaper, far better, more features than Joi Phone. I just cancelled my account today. It took me so long because I’m a loyal idiot and I didn’t know about competitors that offered stuff for business (I mean at really reasonable rates). Hey Joi Phone… FULL FACIAL!!! Yep, right there in your grill!!

Service providers using the Internet to market their services can change terms and conditions of your contact any time they wish. I had a one hour discussion with a mediation expert from my charge card company regarding an unauthorized charge to my account. After canceling my account with Joiphone for VOIP services, they reactivated it without my permission and billed my credit card. During our discussion I learned, this is standard practice used by many companies offering service through the Internet. When I originally signed up I read the terms over carefully, like I always do. There was no language concerning any type of advanced notice, instructions to cancel service, or agreement Joiphone had the right to alter the agreement. All of this information was added after providing initial service. None of this matters. Neither I, nor Joiphone can produce a copy of the original agreement, customers are at the mercy of the altered terms, which of course benefit the company. This is how the challenge process was explained to me. Your credit card company files a complaint with the bank representing the company in question. The final decision lies in the hands of the company's bank. If the company claims they have the right to change the terms, you loose your money. In this case the terms supplied in writing to the charge card company on 9/22/2010, do not agree with the terms posted on Joiphone's Internet site as of 10/12/2010. So what does that mean? The terms only have to appear on the site for one day to be considered enforceable? I've filed a complaint with the Consumer Division of Justice in the State of Wisconsin, to find out if this practice if legal. In the mean time I am trying to find a way of protecting myself so this will not happen again. At the present time I am dealing with at least 6 other service providers with terms posted on the Internet. If you have any ideas or solutions to share I would greatly appreciate them.

This is a company, which as much as it pisses me off, I fall in love with them even more. It's like a kid that bothers you but you find him pretty cute. I'm going to be succinct: 1. The price is beyond excellent. Can't find anything like this all over the Net. They know that and they have you by the “you know whats” because of that. 2. Service. It's good when it works and pretty bad when it doesn't. I must say, that over the past 2 years, the quality has improved tremendously. I give them that. How they deal with issues (when they arise) that is a totally different ballgame. You have to be patient. Tech support (when you get through) is USA based, English-speaking folks. They’re operating out of a Florida center --- mostly East coast, straight up folks. I’m from NY and I like talking to them – a real change than what I find around here in MN where I live. I like that. You talk to Americans. I don't have a problem with accents but I find that to some folks from other cultures, the notion of "listening" falls in a different realm. Again, the service is great when it works which is 98% of the time. When the Net is busy (peak times) and Joi's network is swamped, you'll get crackles and breaking ups in the outgoing (upload) stream. A lot of factors goes into this happening so don't be quick on blaming JoiPhone right a way. Just keep in mind this little tidbit. 3. Web interface. It sucks. It feels as if it was built back in 1990's and never upgraded. But it works after getting used to it. 4. Prepay. I know people had issues with Sunrocket before. So did I -- but I got a prorated refund from my AMEX right away. I think, most people have no idea what rights they have when charging on a credit card. Those who didn't get their money back, I'd say, you're wrong and pretty dumb! You should have gotten your cash back! And the fact that you haven’t shows how ignorant you are! If you carry a credit card in your wallet, be sure you know what it means, what rights you have as a user, etc. I’m tired of morons disseminating erroneous information! Don't be afraid to buy upfront 2 years of service. Use a major credit card - AMEX, VISA or MC. AND KEEP A RECORD OF YOUR PAYMENT and if the company goes under ( I really hope they won't because I love the savings), you can ALWAYS get a prorated (what you have NOT USED) amount back! 5. Unlimited service. It’s really not unlimited but rather limited to a really large number of minutes per month. So large, that unless you literally tape your phone to your face or use a personal account for business purposes, there's just no way you can go over the allotted number of minutes a month. The stipulation is in fine print and somehow deceiving. However, I have to be the devil's advocate here and say that it’s necessary to discourage those who use a personal account for business purposes or for something that would otherwise belong to an entirely different tier. I've been with this company for 3 years now and never had a problem using up my "unlimited" minutes. It’s just impossible unless one of more of the above happens. So, in summary: it's a good company that is a bit weird. There's no customer pampering or anything like that. You (the customer) need to understand that all that crappy papering many of you need from a company doesn't exist here. What they do (I hope they’ll be around for another 100 years) is provide you with very, very cheap phone service. What it takes to pass it cheaply to you, make sure you know what you're up against or else, go ahead and pay the 30 and up dollars for fancy, nicer tech support and such.

This is the worst company I have ever conducted business with. They charged me for an adapter and first months service. I did not like there services and tried for 3 months to cancel. Then had to cancel my credit card to get them to stop charging me. Then they send me emails after emails asking for me to return the adapter that I "bought". Even though I clearly paid for it they would not give me the password to unlock it. I found an unlock on the internet and the adapter works great. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!

Right after I signed up for two years, both my phone numbers went down. Callers only get a busy signal. It is now THREE WEEKS and they are doing nothing about it. This company has no business being in phone service if they cant fix a problem for 3 weeks.

I had joiphone for about 2 years and I'm done with them. I'm unable to receive calls for about 1 month now and they are aware of the issue for 3 weeks now and keep telling me they are waiting for my number to be provision back to them. Customer service sucks, asked to talk to manager/superviser 3 times with no luck. They tell me supervisor is off today (ALL 3 TIMES) and that there only is ONE superviser or manager. I'm in the process of switching my services but the new company is waiting for joiphone to resolve the issue with my phone number. There was another outage for 2 days before this and same thing with support people: we are aware of the issue but have no further info. Don't sign up for joiphone. Service is ok when it works, features are very limited.

I prepaid about $240 for one full year to joiphone. From June 25th, 2011 my phone is unable to receive any incoming calls. The caller always gets a busy signal. I called Joiphone numerous times and also emailed them. I asked them to fix the issue and provide me with service I paid for. Every time I called Joiphone they told me that they don't have any ETA on when the service will be restored. today is July 29th and the service is still not restored. I got frustrated and asked them to refund me. I was told that I won't get any money back because that's how it is in the contract. Well the contract also says that Joiphone will provide me with reliable service, what about providing that service and fulfilling the contract? Anyway, my advice to people - DON'T get joiphone.

I prepaid for their service for one full year. More than a month ago I stopped receiving incoming phone calls because of their service interruption. I raised the issue with them couple of times and all they told me was that they don't know when the issue will be fixed. I told them to refund me and I was told that according to the contract I won't get back the money. So I finally cancelled their service and forfeited my money. Don't get their service. Their engineers are dumb, the customer service rep is dumb and the whole company is made with bunch of thieves.

I had a JoiPhone service since February 2007. I was happy by JoiPhone service: stable and reliable (though I have to mention that there was absolutely no support on the phone in 2007 and I had to use google to find the right answers to all set up questions, including router’s ports opening. Well, anyway, I had this service for 5 years until I realize that you can get a cheaper deal on VoIP nowadays. So I decided to cancel JoiPhone service. And here all trouble began. Long story short: 1. You will be charged $85 if you won’t return their equipment. I did. But still being charged $85. I received a collection note today. 2. I have a postal receipt with delivery confirmation, that I faxed over to JoiPhone… they are still saying that they never received their box. I’ll contact collection bureau today to provide all receipts I have and I guess I’ll try to resolve this problem with collection bureau. I will submit a complain to BBB as well. Bottom line: stay away. There are much cheaper options available. Avoid this scam.

I had them for four years. They were good until the last 2 years when they lost my numbers 3 times. Twice we could not get them back and had to get new numbers They offered me another temporary number and then tried to charge me for that even though it was their fault the number was lost. When I returned their gizmo they claimed they did not received it until I had to fax them my return receipt twice. They still owe me money and now they not even returning emails. Keep away from this company.

You can expect to wait at least 24 hours after you contact them to even get a response calling or emailing. They really don't care about their customers. Avoid at all cost. They used to be better but not anymore I've had enough I'm leaving.

Last year I purchased service from JoiPhone. I installed it and it seemed to work ok. after about a month, I started to use the phone more and noticed serious quality issues. The line was staticy and would not connect half of the time. I contacted them and they wanted to send me a replacement adapter. This took about 2 weeks to coordinate and get in. It still was crappy. I asked for a refund and they denied it saying that I was over my 30 days, which I was , only because they wanted to send a replacement that took 2 weeks to arrive. I told them to cancel the service, but even though I prepaid for a year they would not refund ANY money. Here we are a year later and I have started receiving emails that I owe them money because they cannot charge the original card I used to pay for service. Thankfully it expired. I have contacted them and finally have confirmation of cancellation, but they are threatening to turn me over to collections for another YEAR of service... STAY AWAY from this shady company! Use RingCentral instead. They had no problem making their product work at my home...
